The Sphynx breed follows established breed standards recognized by international feline associations, including:

The Sphynx cat originated in the 1960s in Canada when a naturally occurring genetic mutation resulted in a hairless kitten named Prune. Breeders selectively developed the breed over the following decades, refining its characteristics and ensuring its health. The Sphynx cat's hairlessness is caused by a recessive gene mutation in the KRT71 gene, which affects keratin production responsible for hair growth. Unlike other hairless breeds, such as the Devon Rex, which has a different genetic mutation affecting coat texture, the Sphynx's lack of fur is a result of a complete disruption in hair follicle development.

For a kitten to be hairless, both parents must carry the hairless gene. If a Sphynx is bred with a fully coated cat that does not carry the gene, the kittens will have normal fur but may pass on the hairless gene to future generations if bred with another carrier.

 Due to their unique genetic makeup, Sphynx cats require specific health monitoring:

• Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM): A common heart condition in cats, regular screening through echocardiograms is essential.
• Skin & Oil Production: Without fur to absorb natural oils, Sphynx cats need regular baths to prevent skin issues.
• Temperature Sensitivity: Lacking a fur coat, they are prone to feeling cold and require warm indoor environments.

Breeding Sphynx cats requires careful selection to ensure genetic diversity, maintain breed standards, and prevent health issues. Responsible breeders follow these practices:

• Genetic Testing: Ensuring breeding cats do not carry harmful hereditary conditions.
• Outcrossing: Introducing select coated breeds, such as the Devon Rex, to maintain genetic diversity and avoid inbreeding.

• Leg Length: The most noticeable difference is the Bambino’s short legs, inherited from the Munchkin breed, giving them a distinctive dwarf-like appearance. Sphynx cats have long, lean legs in comparison.
• Body Proportion: While the Sphynx has a sleek and muscular body, Bambinos have a compact and stocky frame due to their short legs.

The Bambino breed is relatively new compared to the Sphynx. It was first developed in the early 2000s in the United States by Pat and Stephanie Osborne, who wanted to create a cat that combined the affectionate nature of the Sphynx with the short-legged Munchkin's adorable appearance.

The name "Bambino," which means "baby" in Italian, was chosen to reflect their kitten-like appearance and playful demeanor. Despite being a designer breed, Bambinos have gained popularity among cat enthusiasts for their affectionate personalities and unique looks.

Since the breed is still developing, not all cat associations recognize the Bambino, but it has gained traction in specialty cat registries. Ethical breeding practices ensure that these cats remain healthy and free from genetic issues associated with dwarfism and hairlessness

The defining short legs of the Bambino come from the Munchkin breed, which carries a dominant genetic mutation affecting limb development. This gene, known as Achondroplasia, results in shortened limb bones while keeping the rest of the body proportional. 

 How Bambino Genetics Work

• One Munchkin Gene (Munchkin x Non-Munchkin) → The kitten will have short legs.
• Two Munchkin Genes (Munchkin x Munchkin) → This combination is lethal in the womb, meaning ethical breeders avoid breeding two short-legged Bambinos together.
• One Hairless Gene (Sphynx x Non-Sphynx) → The kitten will have fur but may carry the hairless gene.
• Two Hairless Genes (Sphynx x Sphynx) → The kitten will be hairless.
